Subscription-Based Software Development Service: How it Works
Recently at StateWalker we started a new proposal for startups and big companies: “development of web applications and internal tools, by subscription, at a fixed price of 3K€/month”. Our proposal is very handy, in particular when the company’s internal IT department is overloaded.
This effective way of working applies three main principles:
- Short iteration cycles
- Asynchronous interaction
- Customer involvement
The goal here is to speed up these iterations and move the project forward as quickly as possible.
Short Iterations
We define an iteration as a round trip between us - the service provider - and the client; it corresponds to a development cycle. The client describes the functionality needed and the service provider responds. The client checks and responds on his/her turn making us start the next iteration.
Results of each iteration can be quite various - it can be a document with the description of next steps, a meeting summary, a working application available on-line or the documentation for the code source.
Interaction with the Client
To minimize the time lost in discussions we make use (in general case) of asynchronous communication.
To start the project we make a ~2h discussion with the client to understand the goal of the project, define the profile of final users and their expected usage pattern of the future application.
We write a technical document, synthetic, describing the expectations of the client which will be used to align our visions, define priorities and set the initial milestones of the project. This is a very important step that will allow mutual understanding, it verifies that we speak the “same language”.
The first results are given back to the client with a short list of actions we expect. Such as the validation of the results of this iteration, respond to our questions (if there are any) and confirm the next steps.
Important: we do not start the next iteration until we have received the requested feedback. This condition is important to make sure that the client is also actively involved in the process and that we have a common goal - which is to move the project forward as quickly as possible.
Subscription
StateWalker's service is available as a monthly subscription at a fixed (low) price. There is no limited number of iterations. The sooner the customer answers our questions, the sooner we start the next iteration. We are committed to a return within a maximum of two working days from receipt of our client's response.
The first two weeks the client tests the formula and only pays if satisfied with the result.
Conclusion
We position ourselves more as partners of the client. We have a common goal which is to discover together the simplest and most effective way to solve a problem and carry out the client's project.
The low subscription price and collaborative working mode assures our clients that they can easily experiment, search and change their minds (if necessary) without being blocked by fixed and signed specifications.
